Is there anything that I should do if I only think that a person is having a panic attack?

If you believe that somebody is having symptoms are suggestive of a panic attack, and first try to work out whether they know what is happening or not. Find out if this has happened to them before. If it has then you will need to talk them down from their excited state.

Try to introduce yourself to them by telling them your name.

If you are not sure whether the person is having a panic attack or a heart attack – then what do you do?

This is a tough one as the differences between a panic attack and more serious disorders are often minor. To be honest, it is not possible to be absolutely certain without the aid of certain diagnostic aids, such as ECGs or blood tests.

If you are uncertain, then follow the basic first aid principles, that is airway, breathing, circulation. Look around for medicalert necklaces or bracelets. Obviously, heed any advice given by the alert. Sometimes you need to call in the cavalry, just to stay safe.

OK – but if they are having a panic attack – then what do I do?

Clearly, one of you needs to be calm. Try to get one or two key ideas across, with the words that you use. Reassure the person that they will be fine and try to explain to them what is happening. They may come up with some good ideas. Don’t make them feel small or silly. Terror can feel very real and, in the correct circumstances will save their life.

Sadly, it is sometimes scary in inopportune times, which will lead to people feeling less resourceful and helped.
