Depression may be indicated by a person who feels unhappy for many days. If the unhappy feeling or feeling of apathy lasts for at least two weeks and is accompanied by the loss of interest in daily activities, then it is possibly an indication of major depression. Depression can be seen as a negative trait but having it does not mean that you have a weak personality. This highly treatable condition can be treated so that thoughts, behaviors, and feelings associated with it are easily managed.

Chemical and structure changes in the brain are thought to be two of the main causes of depression. Factors affecting the different reactions of people to these brain alterations include traumatic events, medications, substance abuse, and hormonal or seasonal changes.

The stress that comes from traumatic events may be responsible for the changes in the brain and the depressive episodes that come with it. Depression may also be caused by any kind of medication, alcohol or drug abuse, or hormonal changes. Because the lack of sunlight during winter can strongly affect some people, they only experience depression during these months.

The symptoms of depression, which can greatly affect daily life, can either be physical or emotional. Because a lack of interest in daily activities may occur, the person suffering from depression may feel guilty about the positive aspects in life. Decreased energy and appetite, physical ailments, and excessive sleeping are other symptoms of depression.

Methods To Cure Depression

Diagnosing depression accurately greatly depends upon obtaining a thorough account from the patient. Any pertinent medical history, such as having a sibling or parent who has similar issues should be communicated as well. Depression is more common in women but everyone having depressive episodes can benefit from treatments such as therapies, medications, exercise, herbal supplements, surgeries, brain stimulation, and social support.

Norepinephrine and serotonin are examples of antidepressants that can influence brain chemicals positively. The right prescription drug fights off the depressing feelings brought about by these neurotransmitters. Accordingly, the right drug or combination of prescription drugs along with talk therapy often curtails moderate or mild cases of depression. Such interpersonal therapy may help depressed individuals overcome feelings of loneliness, understand and rebuild relationships, and give them a new-found reason for reconnecting with others. Some people get better after several months of therapy while others may need to take it longer.

Because endorphins are released in the brain during exercise, physical activity can also be used as a treatment for depression. These endorphins can improve the patient’s mood and increase their threshold for pain as well. Engaging in twenty to thirty minutes of exercise a few days a week may increase energy levels, reduce stressful feelings, improve sleep habits, and raise self- esteem in depressed patients. Those who suffer from seasonal depression can also feel these effects when they undergo light therapy.

St. John’s Wort and other herbal supplements can also be used for ways of treating depression but they are considered as less reliable than the other treatments. Depressed individuals can also benefit from pets since they provide companionship and unconditional love. Brain implants and other surgical procedures are also available for patients whose depression cannot be treated by any of the treatments mentioned above. Staying in a positive environment is one of the best ways to make sure that you have a good mental health. Depression can be fought by working with medical professionals, finding the right therapy, and staying positive.
