The types of depression must first be understood before it’s treated. Depression troubles 15 million Americans every year, it’s not a joke. The most troubling aspect is that only about 1/3 of those people will actually seek the available cures for depression. Too many Americans are still tarnished by the age-old stereotype associated with any mental illness. They refuse to allow a label placed on them that might damage their good character. In order to treat depression it must be diagnosed. Diagnosis can’t happen until the afflicted seek help. That’s the terrible merry go round of depression.

Depression has many causes. Depression can be brought on by biological, emotional, environmental and physical factors . Don’t overlook the genetic link. Family history plays a major role in many diseases that are passed on down the line. It is not just family history but family life in general. The stress of everyday life can be brutal. For some there is a constant struggle to survive from week to week. For others there is that constant battle to perform satisfactory in a competitive society. Abuse such as sexual, physical or even emotional can overload people with anxiety. The list isn’t a short one.

The worst part about depression is that in the early stages it is sometimes hard to diagnose. It’s hard to see the symptoms even if a loved one suffers from this illness. Everyone gets down in the dumps once in a while. This is natural. Depression is more than just temporary sadness. Early detection is no longer an option when your whole life begins changing. Those suffering from depression tend to feel all alone and disgusted with life. Signs of hope in their lives are gone. Sleep habits and enjoyment from life no longer exist. Treatment is now needed before the illness worsens.

When treating depression the afflicted needs to receive a renewed sense of hope and meaning to be effective. This is typically achieved through ‘talk therapy’. It’s effective after months and sometimes years of treatment. The medical professional also has the option of prescribing anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celex, or Luvox . These drugs are effective but they are accompanied by many side effects as well. Depression treatment with natural herbs has also proven to work well. There are also many depression support groups geared towards working with depressed individuals. Medical professionals should be consulted if you or someone you know shows symptoms of depression.

Just because you feel sad and depressed for a few days does not mean that you have depression. Depression can last for years, it’s a serious illness. Studies have show that around 15 million Americans are affected by this illness each and every year. And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care. The age- old stereotype associated with mental illness influences many to still avoid admitting they suffer from depression. Of the list of progressive ailments depression is one of the worst. Without treatment it will take over your life. It cannot be ignored.

There are many types of depression and it is caused by a variety of factors. Physical and emotional problems, chemical issues, even DNA all play a part. The day to day lives of the victim may even have a role. Stress and other negative influences have been known to contribute. Depression is a very complicated disease. We also recognize the intricacy of man’s mind. The medical profession is working steadily in an attempt to study the mind and how it works. A chemical imbalance in the brain causes depression, that’s known. Researches learn more about this complex series of actions and reactions with passing time. Better treatments come from more knowledge.

Depression treatment comes from a variety of medications on the market. Quick fix schemes exist too, but they don’t work. You have to be careful to seek medications that have been clinically studied and have been proven to display positive effects in the treatment of depression. Not too long ago people who were considered mentally ill were thrown into asylums, never again to be seen or heard. It’s good to know that’s no longer the case. In 1988 the anti-depressant ‘Prozac’ first hit the market in the United States. Although it has side effects it is widely used and it is effective.

Since that time more and more use has been made of a new class of anti-depressants. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, SSRI, are being used today. These include Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox. All have been proven effective but come with varied side effects. There are also numerous natural herbal medications available on the market. The majority of these that have been proven to work as well as the anti-depressants contain the St. John Wort extract ingredient called ‘hyperforin’. If this ingredient is used in the proper strength it is effective. When seeking depression medications that work ask questions, do your research, and know the facts.
